A Firefighter’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, God

whenever flames may rage,

Give me the strength to save some life

Whatever be its age.

Help me to embrace a little child

Before it’s too late,

Or some older person

from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert

And hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently

to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling

and give the best in me,

To guard my neighbour

And protect his property.

And if according to Your will

I have to lose my life,

Please bless with Your protecting hand

My children and my wife.

Lao Tsu’s Peace Prayer | A Call for Inner and Global Peace

In this video, I read Lao Tsu’s “Peace Prayer,” a profound call for harmony that I recently shared at a funeral for a Taoist. This powerful poem speaks to the Taoist belief in the essential connection between inner and outer peace, beginning within each heart and extending to the world.

Lao Tsu, an ancient Chinese philosopher, is widely regarded as the father of Taoism—a philosophy and spiritual path that teaches harmony with the Tao, or “the Way.” Taoism values simplicity, balance, and the natural flow of life, and this Peace Prayer reflects that ethos. It reminds us that to achieve peace in the world, we must first find peace within ourselves.

Lao Tsu’s Peace Prayer
If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbours.
If there is to be peace between neighbours,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.
